Waiting Again

December 9th 2007 21:58
We have a couple of girls due to unpack in the next few weeks.

Princess Fiona is coming up to 4 years of age, but this will be her first baby (cria). She was mated to Cappy who is producing stunning progeny. Fiona also has a wonderful, soft fleece and a teddy bear face, so hoping for a lovely cria from her.

Little Pema is white. She’s just coming up to 2 years. This is also her first cria. Pema was mated to Martini, a suri alpaca. Suri’s have a different type of fleece, so Pema could have either a suri cria, like Martini, or a huacaya type like herself. In either case her cria should also be lovely.

Pema is just visiting. She normally lives with a couple of boy pacas. They came up to our place for shearing and the boys have gone home now. Pema’s staying on until her cria arrives. This is partly so she doesn’t have to endure a bumpy ride home so late in pregnancy, but also so she can have some female company while she has her cria.

Both girls were mated on 19th January, so going by the average (342 days), they’re due on 27th December. 15 days either side is considered normal, so watching carefully from the 15th. In reality, I’m watching carefully now, as we’ve had a premmie here before (305 days).

It’s funny how after ten years it’s still exciting when the crias are due. I guess if I had a thousand alpacas it would all get a bit boring. But because I only have a small herd and every alpaca has a name and I’ve got to know each one individually, it’s still fun.

It could also be because the gestation is so long as well. You’re waiting nearly 12 months for each new baby. It’s hard to tell if they’re actually pregnant too, as some hide the cria in there and you can’t tell if it’s a baby, or just lots of food going through. It can be a bit like a lucky dip sometimes. Is she? Isn’t she? Boy or girl, what colour?

The girls are behaving pregnant though, so fingers crossed for them. Some of the other girls are also (hopefully) expecting from January to March, so a busy summer ahead.

All animal babies are cute. I just love them. This exercise must involve a lot of information keeping, thanks for computers, eh?

Hi HGL. I just keep notes of mating days and type up a list of due dates. It's not strictly necessary, but I like to know when they're due so I can keep an eye on them.

Hi katyzzz.Thank you very much. Glad you're enjoying reading about my pacas.

Hi Rosemary

They really are gorgeous. My friend's parents bred alpacas so I was lucky enough to pat them and see them close up. They're gorgeous creatures.

Hi Tracy. Thanks for dropping by. They are great animals. They seem to have their own little community happening out there in the paddock.
