The long and the short of it - Farewell Lucy
October 26th 2011 00:01
We're down to two dachies (dachshunds) now.
The first one, Benson, came 13 years ago. Then the second, Lucy, six months later.
Seven years flew by and two more came, Hamish and Heidi, brother and sister, 9 years old.
We lost Hamish to back problems (common in dachies) a couple of years later.
Now, we've had to say goodbye to Lucy. The youngest of the pack, she still made it to 12 1/2 before the Big C took her away.
She'd been into the vet a few times over the past six months or so. Pancreatitis diagnosed first, then they thought maybe a broken cruciate ligament when she wasn't using a back leg. That came right again, but then she got lethargic, losing weight, no appetite and we knew something was definitely up.
We took her to the wonderful vet who operated on Hamish's back for us and he did some tests. I knew when the nurse rang to make "an appointment" to pick her up that we were in for some horrible news - they're so nice in there, didn't want to break it to us over the phone.
Anyway, lots of abnormal 'stuff' in there - pancreas, spleen, liver. Couldn't find one kidney in amongst the mess. White blood cell count up etc. etc.
So we bought her home for some palliative care and she was showered with attention, affection, whatever treats she would have, which was milk and cream, Jerhigh Milky puppy treats and spaghetti (just plain - boiled up). Wouldn't touch anything else.
Just two weeks later on 1st October, she told us it was time for her to go.... the absolutely worst thing you have to go through when you have a pet.
Out shopping few days after, I almost bought her a new squeaky toy. Like in slow motion... spot the toy, think 'Lucy will love that', pick it up, then WHAM! that indescribable feeling as reality hits home.
Still, we have 12 years of wonderful memories of Lucy, which are ours to keep. Plus loads of photos and videos of her, chasing her squeaky toys and making us laugh.
Guess thats what it's all about at the end of the day.
