Sounds like…

September 20th 2007 22:56
Just like every animal, alpacas have their own sounds. The main noise they make is a Hum, which you’ll hear when they’re concerned about something. This is a very common sound to hear alpacas making at shows when they’re generally stressed out to the max. Mums and babies also hum to each other.

Ok, this next one is pretty obvious, the Spit. This is the sound of some regurgitated food flying at high speed from the face of an otherwise lovely animal. A spit is one alpaca telling off another one. They don’t usually spit directly at humans, unless you’re really annoying them.

Another alpaca sound is the Alarm Call. This is a pretty unique sound. It is loud and hard to ignore! An alpaca will do this when there’s a perceived threat present, like a dog or cat that they’re not familiar with. I have one alpaca who habitually does the Alarm Call when the food comes out. She does it to distract the others, while she hoes in. It worked the first few times, but the others have pretty much got it sussed out now and just ignore her.

Alpacas have a mating call, of sorts. The males Orgle before and during mating. They blow their cheeks out and make a sound a bit like a gargle.

I imitate an orgle when I want to pregnancy test the females. I walk behind them and do the orgle sound. If they’re pregnant, their ears go flat back on their heads. It’s not absolutely conclusive, once you know your girls well, you can get a good indication whether to go and bring the male in. You have to be careful though, if you keep orgling at a pregnant alpaca after she’s put the ears back, her next communication to the orgler will be a massive spit .

Hi D.

They're great animals to have - and they eat grass. Beats that boring Victor 4 stroke in the shed any day.

They give me an excuse to practice my photography, writing, video and sound editing too. Bonus. Cheers.

Rosemary,

aw that is just fatastic!!! *lol* I just love that Orgling, can I use it instead of *lol* or *chuckle* I can say *orgle* ha ha ha ... adorable!

I used to sit with my goats (when I had a property) and the matriarch used to hum to me, while I wrote my memoirs *chuckle*... but saidly, that was about the limit of her repoirtee, Alpacca's are much more emotive.

I am enjoying your posts so much, Rosemary, thanks for sharing ...they really brighten my day.

Lilla ...

Hi Lilla. Thanks for dropping by.

It is a funny noise the boys make. *orgle, orgle* They do it the whole time they're with the girl - 20 minutes on average.

It sounds a bit like they're having a good laugh, especially when they put in the occasional snort *orgle*.

Cheers.

Hi Louie.

I have one that goes off like a machine gun if you get her on the wrong day. A bit like a boss I had once - *gulp*

Cheers.

They are just like humans really, aren't they? That male 'orgle' sounds strangely familiar

They are, JoH. It's a bit scary sometimes the way they look at you. I know what all the noises mean, but I'd love to read their minds. Cheers.
