Protexin – for the slops

May 1st 2008 00:57
This is going to be an incredibly boring post for 99.9% of the people in the world today. HOWEVER, there is probably a person out there in the world (or even maybe two) who have an alpaca, or a pig, goat, chicken, horse or dog, with the slops. And if you’ve ever had an animal with the slops, you’ll appreciate that this post may be very useful for them.

This is about a product called Protexin which is a multi-strain probiotic, useful in the treatment of scours in animals. Scours is another name for the slops - or diarrhoea if you want to get technical

POO SUCKER 5000

March 16th 2008 21:08
Is what I call my manure machine. Its correct name is a Greystone Yard Vac and it sucks up the alpaca poo out in the paddocks.

Snip Snip

We did toenails on Saturday. Here’s a tip: When cutting alpaca toenails, plan to do it after it has been raining.

After rain, it’s a bit like how your nails are softer after a bath or shower. Same with alpacas when they’ve been walking about on wet ground

The Mallon halter was developed by a well known trainer of alpacas and llamas, John Mallon. John has made a number of DVD’s on alpaca/llama handling.

There are quite a few different types of alpaca halter out there on the market. Which you buy and use depends largely on your own personal preferences, the local availability and of course, your budget.

We’ve tried a few different types over the years and there are two types which get used around here (while the others lay collecting dust in the back of the tack cupboard

Tough Rodents Round Here

October 15th 2007 01:30
This post isn’t about alpacas, but another type of furry creature you tend to find on rural properties. I think it has more to do with poultry than alpacas. Anyway, we had a bit of a mouse thing happening which had to be dealt with. I haven’t been a fan of regular mousetraps since I saw one go off and the poor mouse took a full 30 seconds to stop struggling.

I don’t like poisons much either. It must be a horrendous way to go, and I don’t want to risk having poisons around with my small dogs

Anatomy of an Alpaca Trailer

October 10th 2007 21:47
My Dad, who was a Spring Maker for 60 something years, made our alpaca trailer. He originally built it as a removable cage for the back of the flat-tray, but the ramp was way too steep and high to haul the alpacas up. And getting off, they’d simply jump, so if you happened to be holding onto the end of a lead when they went, you’d go paca-sailing off the back of the vehicle. Not fun.

So he made the cage into a trailer. It’s a tandem trailer (two wheels on each side). I think this makes it more comfortable for the alpacas, and it remains stable when not attached to the vehicle. You can walk around in it without it rocking like a see-saw

Move dem Pacas

August 14th 2007 23:02
Early on, we decided we needed something in which to transport our alpacas. The first thoughts were what if one got sick or injured and we had to get him to a vet in a hurry. Also, if there was a bush fire or something, how would we get them out? Just the typical thoughts that new alpaca owners have.

We already had a flat tray ute, so it made good sense to use that. My dad was a spring maker and built us a stock crate to fit the flat tray. It was steel with wire mesh and a colourbond roof. It had a ramp at the back. The crate even had wind up struts for lifting it on and off the ute as we needed
