Mating Mayhem
April 9th 2008 01:02
I put Cappy and Daizi together this morning, so now most of the girls have now been mated. Ginger has mated three times!
Sheba is playing hard to get, she won’t just sit and mate like the other girls. Cappy will chase her around for a while, but I don’t think he can be bothered much with the mixed messages she’s giving him. That is, waving her tail in his face, then running away from him. Fair enough too.
We’ve got a younger boy here, Rainy, who is just coming up to two years. I’m thinking of letting him chase Sheba around for a while and see if she’ll sit for him.
He’s still young, male alpacas often don’t reach breeding age until 2 and half to 3 years, but he’s certainly interested in the girls.
We’ve only really got until the end of April and perhaps into May to mate the girls, then they’ll have to be held over until spring as I don’t want winter babies round here.
I prefer the crias to arrive when it’s warm and sunny, not when there’s frost on the ground - and when I’ve got a raging flu happening. Alpacas can breed all year round, so it’s just a personal choice thing. I think the summer babies get going a bit faster than the winter ones but that’s just my experience.
Maddie’s boyfriend, Stirling, still needs to come back for a visit and I’ve got no idea if Ginger has taken now or not. I might let Rainy practice on her too if she’s just being a tart.

Rainy would love it. Not sure if big Ol Ging would let him near her though. She doesn't put up with any nonsense from precocious youngsters.

All just a day at the office for alpacas.
Cappy's enjoying himself for sure, but its all a bit of a bore for the girls, they're more interested in the lucerne hay.

About 20 minutes on average.
Yes, pretty civilised. Only gets agro when the girls decide they're not interested. Then there's lots of running, kicking, spitting and screaming.
