Madeline’s Stirling Boyfriend
March 5th 2008 00:57
We’ve finally found a suitable suitor for our beautiful Madeline. Gondwana Stirling came to visit her today and they became well acquainted.
Stirling belongs to Inca Alpaca Stud which isn’t very far from here. Stirling is a handsome boy, sweet natured (that’s very important to me) and with a lovely fleece. I think he and Maddie will produce a very nice cria for us.
Our Cappy will be going to meet one of their girls in a few weeks as an exchange. That way we both get some new genetics into our herds.
I’ll do a “spit off” with Maddie in a fortnight to see if she’s taken. A spit off involves putting a boy with the girl to see if she’s pregnant. If she sits to be mated, she’s not. If she is pregnant, she’ll spit at the boy and run away from him.
Cappy is our only working boy at the moment. He’s Maddie’s dad. If she spits at him, he’ll be unhappy (but I'll be very happy). If she sits, he’ll also be unhappy as he won’t be allowed to mate with her (maybe one of the other girls he’s not related to will oblige). If Maddie’s not pregnant, Stirling will need to come back and try again.
Maddie is from a line of very fertile girls, so fingers crossed that only the one mating will be needed. (No one really wants long-term relationships in the alpaca world).
Some girls will play hard to get and make the boy chase her around (to prove himself) before she’ll let him mate. Others are happy to sit for any male.
Maddie looked quite impressed with Stirling though and it only took a few moments for her to decide he was good enough.

LoveLive at first sight, eh? No-one would ever find me so obliging, if only our lives were so simple.Happy about the gene pool, I take it Stirling is British?

Ah well, she doesn't have to live with him so it is much simpler.
Just looking at his credentials: Stirling is of Peruvian descent (go figure), with some Chilean in there on his mum's side. His granddad was King Arthur, that sounds pretty British. Royalty too, I say!

Congratulations on finding a suitable suitor for Maddie....
I love the expression on his face...it says volumes...and the slightly surprised look on hers...
Luckily for me, I live close enough to be able to come and see the cria when she/he arrives, although that's almost a whole year away

In a year's time you'll be busy waiting for your girls to unpack - pacing the floor, looking out every hour, getting up in the night to check, watching for signs.
They'll wait until you leave the house to visit our new one, and then have their crias while you're out. Always happens.
