Lucy’s Birthday
February 3rd 2008 21:43
Our little black and tan Lucy turned 9 years old on Saturday. Time goes so fast.
We always have a special day for the dogs on their birthdays with presents and lots of games and a roast chicken dinner. Lucy’s a big fan of squeaky toys, so it’s never hard knowing what to get her as a present.
When she was a pup, we once bought her a squeaky rubber fish, so since then, all squeaky toys around here are known as “fishy”. Lucy knows exactly what a fishy is, what a pressie is and will come running with tail wagging madly if you start singing or whistling the ‘Happy Birthday to you’ tune.
Lucy also knows the smell of an un-chewed squeaky toy, so if there’s one hidden anywhere in the house, she’ll find it. Therefore the car boot is the best place to keep them (until we go out in the car that is).
Of course, it’s not sensible to buy just one pressie when you have four dogs, even when only one is having a birthday. So, four pressies get wrapped up. I find tissue paper is best as they can rip into it easily. Each pressie contained a “fishy” of some sort, and a bunch of edible treats.
Heidi also likes the squeaky toys. Hamish does too but makes sure all the food treats are gone first. Benson’s never really been into toys, so he just goes for the food (in between running to the fence to see if he can make the alpacas run!)
We threw the fishys for lucy until she got all the squeaks out and had lots of cuddles and a sleep on the couch. Roast chicken dinner and more sleeps on the couch – Apart from chasing a fishy, sleeping is Lucy’s main pastime. It was a nice day.

How adorable:

Thing is, it's probably as much fun for us watching the dogs, as it is for them. Much like people with human kids I suppose. They're always doing thing that make you laugh.
Lucy does have shiny soft fur. They all need a bath at the moment, but I know they'll just go out and roll in paca poo as soon as I bath them.

I'd hate to think how many squeaky toys we've had round here. There's a crate full in the lounge room and that's after I threw a whole lot out the other week.
There are only a handful left which still squeak though. Most lose their squeak pretty quickly.

It sounds like you have a very happy and squeaky house! We have one dog and I don't know how many toys he has. Everytime my parents see him they give him a fresh batch, after a while I collect them and pass them onto my friend's pooch.

Lucy's the black (and tiny bit of tan) one on the left. Hamish is in the front and Heidi and Benson at the back.
Lucy's the youngest at 9. It's like a senior citz for dachshunds round here.

yes I can see her now, she clearly knows there are some goodies in there, doesn;t she?
absolutely delightful. I hope she shares many more with you... they all look set for another 10 at least.
HaHAHAHa I was just reading in the Guiness Book of records about this cat that lived to be 36. He had meat and veg on a plate every morning, with a cup of hot coffee in a saucer with his master.
