Little Baby Update
January 7th 2008 03:41
The four new crias are doing well and are happily exploring their world.
The oldest, Donald, is smaller than both Emily and Holly, who are nearly a week younger. The girls' mums are bigger animals, so it makes sense.
I hope it won't upset Donald's ego too much being a little guy. Though he's already been neck wrestling with Marco who is almost 4 months old (and much bigger), so it obviously hasn't yet.
Donald is a very inquisitive boy. He marches up to stick his face in your camera.
All the crias are racing around the paddock like Melbourne Cup candidates. I think I can safely assume they're getting enough milk from their mums. They're starting to pick at the grass now too - they grow so fast, these critters.
Emily is still sticking close by her mum. She's just quietly learning about the world and likes to spend time laying about in the sun.
Holly is much more independent and also quite inquisitive. She was spending a lot of time at the poo pile early on, making me wonder if everything was ok with her, but she's growing normally and holds her own in the nightly sprints round the paddock.
The latest bub hasn't been named yet. Her owner has given her alpacas Tibetan names, so is thinking about something to suit. This one is a tiny, delicate, little flower. Anyone know the names of any tiny, delicate, little Tibetan flowers?
Anyway, Little Tibetan Flower is just a ball of fluff. She's so small (her mum is tiny too), and looks fragile, but in reality she's as fast as the rest and quite forward as well.
Our next crias aren't due to arrive until February, but I'm keeping a close eye on Maralyn, as she's looking big and round. Maralyn had a premmie baby a few years ago. He was a big baby. Too big to stay in, but not quite ready to be out. He was ok, but it was touch and go for a few days.

Alpaca Notes - Tasmania
Hi AmyHuang. The one in the last pic is the softest, silkiest little alpaca I have ever seen (felt). She doesn't have a lot of fleece on her, but it is soooooo soft!

Life in Germany
This is only the second time I'm visiting, but I've read several of your posts, and I just love the way you describe and photograph those cuddly little creatures.
It's always a pleasure to listen to a person who has a true passion for what they do.

Thanks for visiting.
I like writing about alpacas, they're such cool animals to have around. It almost feels like you're peeking through a window into their society, where they have their own hierarchy, rules and traditions, just like us.

Flick Wit
Lurvely. And the white one is sweet too, though she looks like she's got three legs in that pic, even in her shadow!

"(Rose) Mary had a little 'paca, its fleece was soft as silk!"
- And a big strong paca he will be if he drinks up
all his milk.
Holly definitely has four legs, though she runs so fast they're usually just a blur. All those photos are a bit dodgy. Taken too early in the morning. (Lighting all wrong and not enough coffee).
