Is there an alpaca in the house?

August 23rd 2007 05:13
I heard about an old lady whose alpaca had died and she was looking for another one. Apparently her alpaca had lived in the house and slept with her on the bed.

Whether this is true or not, I don’t know. I suppose there’s no reason why you couldn’t have an alpaca as a house pet, though personally, I prefer them to be out in the paddock.

I guess if I did bring one or two alpacas into the house and spent a lot of time with them, that I would become as attached to them as I am to my dogs (who live in the house). But I don’t think the dogs would like it much and anyway, I don’t really want to have alpacas laying about on my furniture, eating my food and drinking my wine etc.

I love the alpacas, they’re great animals but they are very different to dogs. Dogs have been bred for thousands of years to be part of a human “pack”. While alpacas have also been domesticated, to a point, they have been kept primarily as livestock, and haven’t lost their natural instinct to be wary of humans.

I do bring the alpacas up close to the house. There’s a certain feeling you get sitting out on the deck on a warm summer's day, with a nice glass of wine – just watching your alpacas mow the lawn for you. Ahhhhh! That’s hard to beat.

I’ve seen them look in the windows occasionally, but they don’t get too close, probably because they haven’t figured out whether it is safe or not. They are incredibly curious animals though, and I think that if I left the door open, it wouldn’t be too long before they plucked up the courage to have a peek inside.
