Here comes another one

Lovely Sheba has had a little girl cria, born 12.05pm on Saturday. She’s snow white and gorgeous. She was too bright for the eyes for the first day before she discovered the joys of the rolling patch. Now, with a liberal coating of dirt, she’s more a dull grey colour and doesn’t look so pristine. Never mind, they’ll all be clean again once it rains.
Alpacas can breed anytime throughout the year, but we prefer to have crias arrive during the summer because it’s better for them, and nicer for us. I’ve found winter babies are slower to get going and just don’t do as well as the summer ones. I guess in the northern states, early spring would be the best time, before it gets too hot.
We have one more girl due to unpack anytime now and a couple due in February. The new baby hasn’t been named yet. We’re thinking about Holly but we’ll throw a few names around and eventually one will stick.
Every animal in our herd has a name We only have a small herd, which we keep for fun and grass mowing more than anything else. It’s fun to think up different names for them – though after nearly 11 years it’s getting harder to come up with new names we both like.
It's much simpler though, to refer to a particular alpaca as Alice, or Bob or whatever, than to say ‘the small white alpaca out of the fawn one’, or to give them numbers as some alpaca breeders do - alpaca B1224.
Anyway, little one, whatever her name is, and mum are both doing well which is the most important thing. The other crias were racing about the paddock last night, so they must be doing well too.
