Had the snip

December 28th 2010 21:17
Well, our two remaining 'boys' have have their little operation and are now what's called in the industry here as 'wethers'.

It's the same term as used in the sheep industry, a castrated male animal.

Some people use the term gelding as they do with horses and others call them capona or capón, although this is much less common.

So Cappy and Peter Pan and now relieved of all that testosterone and will make lovely calm pets (grass munchers) for someone. Peter's only still a young guy and has never been used as a working (breeding) male, so he doesn't have any issues with that anyway and we've already put him back in with the girls.

Cappy has been a stud male and has a tendency to beat up on any other male he sees, even wethers, as he views them as competition (it's a male thing). Therefore he'll need to be kept separate from the others for a couple of months or until the hormones go from his system and he settles down. This isn't a problem as he had his own paddock as an entire male anyway.

We can't put him with the girls yet as he'll still chase them and we don't want any more crias from him. This is still possible for a short time after castration.

Peter is still wobbly from his staggers (or whatever his problem is). He gets around just fine and is happy and in great condition, but he just has some issues with the coordination. I guess the best way to describe him is that he looks a bit drunk when he walks and bobs his head around, like a Thunderbird. He's such a cute little guy though and his fleece is a beautiful cream/apricot colour. He'd make a wonderful pet for a hand spinner and we're looking for a nice home for him. Hoping that maybe he, Cappy (once he's calmed down) and ol' Bob might be able to go together.
