Fleeced!

December 29th 2009 23:12
Now Christmas is out of the way, I have a shed full of alpaca fleece to deal with.

I sell some fleeces from the farm gate, but most goes on the website and I sell it via Paypal. This has worked out pretty well, but it's a bit cumbersome and time-consuming to set up, specially at this time, when the pacas have just been shorn, so there's a ton of fleece to sort out and list

What colour?

May 25th 2008 23:30
If you’re registering alpacas you need to state what colour they are. The AAA (Australian Alpaca Association) has a chart with 12 colours on it and you need to pick the closest to the colour of the alpaca you’re registering.

Fleece to Wool

April 16th 2008 04:26
I’m looking for a spinner. Someone who likes to take the lovely soft fleece from my alpacas and turn it into beautiful, hand-spun wool to be knitted into comfy, warm things to wear in the winter time.

Alpaca Hat

November 19th 2007 03:22
My mum spins and knits the fleece from our alpacas. She doesn’t think she’s very good at spinning, but compared to the tangled, knotty bit of rope that I produced when I tried it, her work is pretty professional.

I don’t have enough patience, or interest, to get into handcrafts, so I just look after the animals, and mum can take care of the value adding

Fancy’s

October 11th 2007 22:14
These are a commercial breeder’s nightmare. Alpacas with multi-coloured fleece. The commercial breeder wants all their alpacas exactly the same colour – usually white, so the fleeces can all go in the bale together.

Huacaya or Suri?

September 4th 2007 22:15
Which alpaca do you like best?

There are two types of alpaca, Huacaya and Suri. They’re essentially the same, but the huacaya has a fleece similar to a sheep, while the suri’s fleece hangs in ringlets

Shorn or Unshorn?

August 28th 2007 23:59
So which is the better look, the alpaca in full fleece or the just shorn one? Some people love the alpaca with tons of fleece on, all big and woolly. They think alpacas look weird when shorn. Others think the shorn look is just the cutest thing. Some people think alpacas are just plain ugly regardless (had a look in the mirror lately – hmmm?).

Personally, when it comes to fully fleeced alpacas, I think it depends on the individual alpaca and their fleece qualities. Young alpacas generally all look superb in full fleece while the older ones – not so good. Alpacas with uneven fleece, not much down the legs and all that hairy stuff around their chests look pretty ordinary in full fleece, so much better shorn, while the ones with tons of dense, even fleece all over look simply stunning
