A new fence for the dachies
November 21st 2007 00:32
The fencing guys are here today putting big holes everywhere. We're not doing fencing for the alpacas this time, but for the very spoiled dachshunds who live here. Although it will also mean I can get the alpacas to eat more grass for me (so I don't have to mow it
). Currently, I have to put up a temporary fence when I want the alpacas up near the house.
The fence is going to be treated pine with wire mesh. Something like this one:
Alpacas don't need particularly good fences. Some male alpacas will challenge a fence if there's available girls on the other side. So, a decent fence is a great thing to have there. But apart from that, they're pretty good on fences.
Alpacas can certainly jump a standard rural fence, but tend not to bother unless they're really freaked out.
Most of our fences are just 5 strand wire, or sheep fencing. The dachies can walk straight through them, so I want to dachy proof a larger area for them to explore and sniff about in safely.
When I let them out now, I need to keep a close eye on them so they don't wander up near the road. I have a dachy who goes for anything that moves, so a car, jogger, bike, or horse going along the road will have him running after them. He's 9 years old, but I still can't catch him once he's off.
So the fences are going up. The fencing guy lives just up the road and he's done quite a bit of work for us. He’s always done a good job.
It's going to be expensive, but one thing I've learned is, it's better to pay a bit more and have the job done properly, than to waste less money on something that is complete rubbish.

I still get caught sometimes but I'm getting more suspicious of anything that looks like a bargain. There's always a reason why it's cheap. That's guaranteed.
