Farewell, Maralyn :(

Maralyn alpaca
Maralyn alpaca

Well, Maralyn didn't make it. The broken leg was set in plaster and she seemed ok there for a while, just calmly and stoicly hanging about with the others eating grass and not putting any weight on it. But, sadly, infection set in and well, she didn't make it.

I'm overwhelmingly sad of course, but more than that, I'm totally crapped off with myself for not having her put to sleep as soon as it happened.

OK, there was a chance that it would heal up etc. etc. blah-dy blah-dy blah. But, I don't know. Why do we humans think we need to (or have any right to) just charge in, like some sort of superheros, and try and fix everything when nature (who has been coping with the entire universe for millions or trillions (whatever!) of years quite nicely, on her own, with no help from us, thank you ), has already dictated quite unequivocally how things are going to be.

But anyway, I'm not interested in opening up cans of worms and inviting debate about the ethics or whatever of keeping animals, (or people for that matter, as we fit the category as well as any other creature on the planet) alive, just so we can feel good about ourselves for 'saving' them! Just makes me ponder what we are actually trying to save them from, exactly. As no one, so far has provided any conclusive or even convincing evidence about that either.

So, stuff happens. There's a saying, no idea who coined it, that where you have livestock, you have dead stock. Fact of life when you live on a farm.

Fact of life when you live in the world.

Lovely to see you and your alpacas again, but I understand why we don't, time is precious, but a sad story here, but as you say, that's life!

Im so sorry. I would have done the same thing, and probably hated myself after.

I dont think we are saving them from anything, rather saving them FOR better times. I have had so many that I thought I should just let go, but they are still going now, living happy lives. You can never know which way it will go, but I always say, we have to try, we have to give them a chance.

I am sorry for your loss! We lost 3 guinea pigs shortly after eachother last year and after having them treated for their ilnesses because the vet advised us to, we ended up having to put them down too. It's not easy to make such a hard decission when there is still so much hope left.
