Fancy’s

These are a commercial breeder’s nightmare. Alpacas with multi-coloured fleece. The commercial breeder wants all their alpacas exactly the same colour – usually white, so the fleeces can all go in the bale together.
Crafts people and hobbyists, on the other hand, love these little guys. They spin up the fleece as it is and see what wonderful coloured wool they end up with, or if they want to separate the colours, they do this when the alpaca is shorn, You can then have your two-toned jumper and scarf, right there on one alpaca.
If they’re bred, some fancy’s, or multi’s as they’re often called, throw multi-coloured crias and others will throw completely solid colours.
We have one girl, Sabrina, who has pretty much reproduced herself with each cria. She’s had one solid coloured cria, so in that case, the sire’s colour gene was stronger than hers, but in her other crias, her multi gene has come through.
I don’t mind getting a fancy cria as they sell like hot cakes. They are unique and different to the solid coloured alpacas. I think my record was one week, from when I put a fancy alpaca on my website, to when someone put down their deposit for him.
I think it’s a personal thing. Some people prefer the solid colours. Some like one particular colour. Others love the fancy’s.
It probably depends a lot on the markings too, plus the temperament and “cuteness” of the individual alpaca. There are some pretty ugly alpacas out there, but hey! Some people don’t look so crash hot either. I prefer the nice natured ones myself, above everything else. There’s not much joy in having a super fine fleeced, superb looking animal, if you can’t get near him without a riot suit.
