Another Alpaca Unpacks

December 28th 2007 04:49
My lovely Alice had a little girl this morning at 10.15. Actually, she had a BIG girl, which explains Alice’s massive belly over the past few weeks.

336 days pregnant

December 20th 2007 22:18
Well, most of the girls are sitting around looking like whales today. We’ve had fantastic weather, warm, sunny days, 30 yesterday and 15 overnight.

A perfect 24 expected today and I think we’ve hit that already

334 days pregnant

Fiona and Pema are starting to sit around like beached whales now. Alice, due on 3rd January, is also looking like a barrel with legs. As they have little fleece at the moment, if you look very closely at the girls’ bellies you can sometimes see the cria (baby) moving about in there.

Waiting Again

December 9th 2007 21:58
We have a couple of girls due to unpack in the next few weeks.

Princess Fiona is coming up to 4 years of age, but this will be her first baby (cria). She was mated to Cappy who is producing stunning progeny. Fiona also has a wonderful, soft fleece and a teddy bear face, so hoping for a lovely cria from her

One of my babies has won a supreme championship! Our little Penelope (Penny), who we sold with her mum a short while ago, took out the grand prize at a recent alpaca show.

Introducing Madeline

November 15th 2007 21:38
This is Maddy, born on 11 January 07. She has a teddy bear face, which is a very trendy look in alpacas at the moment and absolutely tons of fleece. (The fleeces are coming off next Friday, weather permitting – mental note to self : Must clean out the shed!)

Spit Off!

November 7th 2007 03:06
I did a ‘spit off’ with the alpacas yesterday. This is a method of determining if a female alpaca could be pregnant. It’s called a ‘spit off’ because a female alpaca will spit off a male if she’s pregnant.

It’s a bit hit and miss, but since we’re not relying on our girls producing crias (babies) for our income, this method suits us. It’s also free, unlike other methods such as ultrasounds and blood tests

BOYS!

October 16th 2007 22:36
Sometimes male alpacas need a bit of coaching when it comes to girls.

Some are natural Romeo's and seem to know their role from birth, (a bit sad for ones destined for the snip). Other boys need a lot more instruction and it can take them a while to get the gist of it

Brown eyes or blue?

October 2nd 2007 22:28
Alpacas can have either brown eyes or various shades of blue, from very dark to an ice water blue. Some have one brown and one blue.

There is a lot of controversy within the industry about whether alpacas with blue eyes should be used for breeding. Some people think that the blue eye gene is a defect and should be bred out, Other people prefer the blue eyed alpacas
