Daizi’s Baby
March 10th 2008 22:26
My beautiful Daizi had her first cria on Saturday. I thought she’d been behaving a bit imminent for a few days. Her due date was the 13th March so the gestation was 333 days.
Of course, we were out when the cria arrived – we went to test drive a Toyota Prius (would like it, just thinking about the finances). When we got home, I saw a tiny little baby way down the paddock. I thought it could be Alana’s baby who is nearly 4 weeks old, but looked a little small so we went down to have a look.
She’s a little fawn suri girl. Daizi is a first cross suri and so is the cria’s dad, Martini. A first cross has one parent suri and the other huacaya. The difference between the two is in the fleece. Suri fleece looks more silky and shiny and hangs flat off the alpaca, often like ringlets or corkscrews. Huacaya fleece looks much more like a sheep fleece, often crimpy and I suppose more boofy looking (is that a real word?)
Daizi’s being a perfect mum. As with all the new mums, she’s keeping a very close eye on her baby and not letting her stray too far away.
We’re thinking maybe Lily for her name, though the name will need to be tossed around and thought about for a while until we’re sure it suits her. That can take quite a while round here.
I’m pretty sure she’s our last cria for this season. Big old Ginger was mated last year and would have been due sometime in February. She’s 13 years old so perhaps she’s thinking she’s past all that. Fair enough. I’ll let her mate if she wants to, but consider her pretty much retired.

I know, totally the wrong time of day to be taking photos, but never mind. They'd both been having dust baths anyway and were both a lovely shade of dirt.
I'll wait till they're clean and try for a better photo when the sun's in the right place.

As Pema's cria Chameli is a half sister to her, I think Lily is lovely as a name- I'm sure there are fawn lilies as well
It seems that Martini is producing sweet little flowers...
This could get addictive, watching for announcements about new crias. Shame there aren't any more to come at this stage....

Martini's crias are stunning. Wish I still had him. Rainy got through the fence and was chasing the girls the other day - BOYS!

I've been away and thought I'd come and catch up on you and the "family.." *chuckle* and here - already - (I also just turned my back for a minute or two) and a wee addition... awww and as cute as a button.
Hello little-one of Daizi... (I love Lily as her name)...and I love the suri fleece when it is long and hangs across their little faces.

Lilly's still a delicate, little girl but she's just a blur when she runs. I haven't even had a close look at her yet as I can't catch her.
