A Winner!
November 29th 2007 21:20
One of my babies has won a supreme championship! Our little Penelope (Penny), who we sold with her mum a short while ago, took out the grand prize at a recent alpaca show.
Penny’s new owners were already entering a youngster they’d bought from another breeder, so they enquired about possibly entering Penny too.
Now I haven’t shown alpacas for years, because it was a really stressful experience, for them and me (worrying about them). So, I had to answer honestly that I didn’t have a clue how Penny would stack up against her peers in a showing situation.
I know that my alpacas have nice soft fleeces and good temperaments (they’re the traits I aim for here). But I wasn’t expecting one of them to take out the top prize.
So I’m pretty happy about that. I’m so glad they put her in. I wouldn’t have, though I might have to think about it for next years babies.
I didn’t like the shows because of the noise and crowds of people, poking and prodding the alpacas who were cooped up in tiny pens for days on end.
Complete morons (who’d obviously strayed in from sideshow alley and the rides area), would come through the animal sheds drunk-as, with their cigarettes and beer, staggering about and trying to climb into the pens (to "ride the alpacas").
So, the alpacas would be freaking out, and I’d be freaking out – while checking where the nearest fire extinguishers and exits were, in case some idiot set fire to the hay with a cigarette.
Uncontrollable kids would come in, yelling and screaming, poking their balloons, show bags, fairy floss… into the alpacas’ faces. The alpacas were just so scared. I couldn’t wait to get them out of there and back home to some peace and sanity.
Apparently, the shows are more civilised and better organised these days, so I will give it due consideration for next year. Quite frankly though, I’d rather have happy, contented alpacas, than show ribbons.
Anyway, at least I know that my lovely boy Cappy is coming up with the goods and my beautiful girls are producing top class babies. So a big thanks to Grace and John for putting little Penny in the show.

Alpaca Notes - Tasmania
Hi Louie. Thank you too. The pacas did all the work though. I just organised for the two to get acquainted.
