Which halter to buy – Part 2: The Mallon halter
January 20th 2008 23:31
The Mallon halter was developed by a well known trainer of alpacas and llamas, John Mallon. John has made a number of DVD’s on alpaca/llama handling.
The Mallon halter has an adjustable nose band. It is also adjustable under the chin and around the back of the neck. There’s a metal spring snap for fastening the halter instead of a buckle.
Extremely well made, with strong with soft nylon webbing and metal fittings, this halter comes in various sizes for little alpaca weanlings, up to llama sizes. Several happy bright colours available in this halter as well.
The halter is designed very well to provide a correct and safe fit. It takes a short while to fit to the individual alpaca, as it has three areas to adjust. The strap which goes round the back of the neck is quite fiddly to adjust until you get the hang of it. The up-side of this though, is once it’s fitted correctly, the halter can be put on quickly without messing about and if you need to get the thing off in a hurry for some reason, you can.
This is a good halter if you only have a few alpacas and each one can have his or her own halter. If you want to use the halter on a different alpaca, you’ll need to spend a few minutes making small talk with your alpaca to keep him amused while you make adjustments to the halter. Good practice for your alpaca in staying patient and calm around people.
