RIP Abbey (5 Feb 08 – 23 Mar 08)

April 6th 2008 21:19
It’s been a sad start to the year for some alpaca friends of ours too.

Little Abigail was their brand new cria, a beautiful little white suri girl.

Abbey got caught up in a fence while her owners were out on Easter Sunday and she couldn’t be saved.

Crias sometimes find themselves on the opposite side of the fence from their mums, they’ll go round through an open gate or slip through the fence somewhere.

When it’s time for a drink, they’ll go to where their mum is on the opposite side and try to get back to her through the fence. Sometimes they manage to get through but sometimes they get stuck, If you’re lucky, they’ll stay still until you find them, but sadly, sometimes there’s nothing you can do.

Our friends have had a lot of bad luck with their animals and I really feel for them particularly as we are still getting used to not having our little Hamish around anymore.

I think it’s going to be a miserable winter this year.

It's just heartbreaking how vulnerable animals are...and how dependant on us to be there to help them. You can't tell them not to go near the fence, or to go round. I'm sorry for your friends....it must also have been awful for them to come home to such a sight... and the worst is that you always blame yourself when something goes wrong, even if it was unavoidable.

We can only do what we are able to....and often that isn't enough.

Grieving takes a long time, whether for a human or an animal...
I feel for you and for your friends...

Thanks Henni.

It is heartbreaking. With pacas you wait so long for each cria to arrive as it is. This one was a pet too, they only have 4 pacas.

Sorry to hear the sad news again ROsemary... poor thing, it must have been so traumatic for both mother and cria...

It is a tragedy Lilla, you wonder what the pacas are thinking when stuff like this happens. Probably just the same as us when we can't save someone.

We had a paca mum who looked for her dead cria for several days once before she finally went back to the herd. Even then she'd keep looking towards where the cria was for ages.
