Alpaca Roll
November 12th 2007 04:33
Not an alternative to the traditional steak sandwich or sausage in bread, although alpacas are made of meat same as every other animal. This roll is actually of the physical exercise variety.
Alpacas don’t have lanolin in their fleece like sheep do. It is believed that they roll in order to coat their fleece in dirt, so they’re more water resistant. This makes sense and it is true that if you go out after a downpour and stick your hand into an alpaca’s fleece, the top couple of centimetres will be saturated, but under that the rest of the fleece down to the skin is perfectly dry.
They will make a rolling patch in their paddock which all the alpacas will use. It’s a bit annoying when they decide to make a rolling patch in a spot that would look much nicer in grass, but there you go. They’ll often start a patch where the grass is struggling anyway though, such as under gum trees where there isn't much grass and it’s already pretty dry.
I’ve found my alpacas particularly like to roll right after they’ve been having some fun with the hose (see Under the Hose). They're wet, so when they go and roll they end up totally filthy.
It doesn’t matter though as the next rain will have them all looking nice and clean again.

Alpaca Notes - Tasmania
Alpacas are very closely related to llamas. Llamas are bigger animals though.
I don't think there is any giraffe connection, but they are distantly related to camels, apparently.
Cheers.
