Preg Test – Negative & Positive
March 20th 2008 00:19
Madeline sat when I put her in with Cappy yesterday, which means she’s probably not pregnant. If she were pregnant, she would have spat at him and run away. I had to get him off her quickly (he’s her dad and we don’t want to go there). He chased a couple of the other girls for a while, then happily, big old Ginger sat, so he still got to have some fun.
Ginger hasn’t had a cria for a few years. She’s 13 years old this year. Ginger has been unwilling to mate recently, so I was starting to think about retiring her. Perhaps seeing all the new crias running about has made her clucky again. Anyway, Cappy was more than happy to oblige, so fingers crossed for another beautiful cria for her. Ginger always had very friendly babies, (not precocious, but forward and inquisitive), just the type I like best.
Here’s a video of Cappy and Ginger (in the background). In the front are Maddie and little half-brother Donald - he hasn’t quite figured it out, but then, he is only 3 months old, so he’s probably doing well considering.
As for Maddie, it just means she’ll need to get re-acquainted with her boyfriend, Stirling, from up at Inca Alpacas. I think he’s away working somewhere else at the moment, so we’ll need to make a time for him to come back and visit Maddie again, maybe next week.
Some girls take first time and Maddie’s line are usually like that, but never mind. Fingers crossed for a successful second mating.
Today, I put Alana in with Cappy. The head went up, ears back and she gave him "the look". He tried her anyway, but he gets the message pretty quickly and knows when he isn't needed. He's a smart cookie. So, that's good news as it probably means another beautiful cria for Alana. Not so good for Cappy though as he's running out of eligible girls.

Talk about a sex education, I'm still learning.

He is a funny little guy. Hopefully he'll have what it takes to be a herd sire when he grows up. He's showing good potential. Cheers.

At least Donald had an early practice run with a role model to try to copy. How cute is that, climbing and falling all over her....
It reminds me of a scene from a Peter Sellers film, 'The Unbearable Lightness of Being', where he's trying to 'be romantic' with Shirley MacLane by copying every move from a movie on the TV behind her....
It's lucky Stirling lives close by for another date with Maddie...
Good news about Alana wanting nothing to do with Cappy.

Fingers crossed for Ginger. I hope she'll have another cria. She's such a good mum.
I think I've seen that Peter Sellers film, or at least that scene from it. It sounds very familiar. Cheers.

I think it's all a bit of a bore for the female alpacas. They just sit there, they look around and yawn, sometimes they start eating the grass. If the boy takes too long, they stand up and spit at him.
Thanks for dropping by. Enjoy that awesome food. Cheers.
