An Apricot Baby
February 13th 2008 21:14
Here’s Alana’s second cria, a little girl this time.
She’s a wonderful apricot colour, though these photos don’t show it very well. It’s been raining here too – woohoo – so she’s a bit dirty. (She obviously found the rolling patch pretty quickly).
We didn’t see her arrival. She was born yesterday morning before 7am. I’m guessing probably between 6 and 6.30. I would have been thinking about getting out of bed (but just thinking).
Alpacas usually unpack between 10am and 3pm, which is very civilised of them. It’s believed that they do that so the cria can be up and moving to avoid the night time predators. Makes sense to me.
It doesn’t always work that way though. It’s generally accepted amongst alpaca people that an alpaca going into labour in the evening should be treated as an ‘at risk’ case. They are often the ones which have troublesome deliveries and crias with problems.
Happily, Alana did it all herself without a problem. The cria was already up and nursing by the time I met her and she was hooning around the paddock with the rest of them by lunchtime. Amazing creatures.
Like all of Cappy’s cria’s, she’s perfect. He sure does make nice babies.
Now to think of a name. This is the fun bit. Coming up with something to suit the new alpaca. We still haven’t decided on a name for Maralyn’s cria yet, as things have been so busy around here lately and time just races on.

They come in heaps of colours, white, fawns, browns, greys, black and multicolour.
The boring official colour for this one would be "light fawn" but that covers about 30 shades between cream and caramel, so I prefer to describe them more accurately.
I haven't see a blueberry alpaca, but there are blue-blacks which are so black they give off a blueish hue. Stunning.
I've seen green ones too - but that's only because they've just been spat at by another alpaca

The apricot is a delightful shade, as you can guess I'm into colour.
Mum was very clever, I'm glad I never had to do it all on my own.
I've grown to love all of your alpacas and your charming anecdotes.

Yes, Eating is what alpacas do most of, so it makes sense the babies would locate the milk bar pretty quickly.
She's a very pretty alpaca, like her mum.

Absolutely beautiful.
As for names, we all had a go and
I like, 'Pearl' because of her pearlescent colour.
My little one suggested 'Sophia'
My eldest chose, Tressa
Interested to hear what You chose, if you have already named her.

Thanks for the suggestions. We're still thinking. I know any name would do, but it's more fun to put some thinking into it. Pearl's a nice name. Mmmmm.
