Goodbye girls

October 8th 2007 03:05
Yesterday we said goodbye to a couple of girls we sold, Jessie and Penny. They’ve gone to live about an hour’s drive south of here.

I thought we’d be in for a challenge getting Jessica into the trailer as she likes to make a big fuss. However, little Penny hopped straight in and because Jessie is Penny’s mum, her instinct to take care of her baby over-took her fear of the trailer. After just the slightest hesitation she hopped straight in after her

Upside down and Stuck

October 5th 2007 03:28
Had a bit of drama here yesterday. I was out attempting to free some wire mesh from the long grass (lesson: never leave wire mesh on the grass) when my neighbour yelled out that one of the alpacas was stuck.

Our neighbours’ house is only about 200 metres away, so easy yelling distance

Sounds like…

September 20th 2007 22:56
Just like every animal, alpacas have their own sounds. The main noise they make is a Hum, which you’ll hear when they’re concerned about something. This is a very common sound to hear alpacas making at shows when they’re generally stressed out to the max. Mums and babies also hum to each other.

24 Hours - Up and At Em

September 18th 2007 22:56
One day old now. He, “Marco Polo” has been cruising about, and he now knows exactly where the milk bar is.

I’m having big trouble getting a decent photo of him. He’s near black, which is always an issue for photos, especially when you’re out in the field and rely on natural lighting. But the photos just don’t seem to be capturing him as he really looks for some reason

Just a Happy Snap

September 11th 2007 02:19
I took this photo while I was down the paddock checking on the girls the other day. The two little girls were just sitting there in the sun together looking very cute.

The fawn girl on the left is Madeline (Maddy), born on 11 January 07 and the white girl is Penelope (Penny), born 28 December 06

Toenails

September 9th 2007 22:29
We did the alpacas’ toenails yesterday. Alpacas don’t have hooves but a padded foot, just like a camel and similar to a dog, but with just two toenails on each foot.

Their toenails grow just like ours and need to be trimmed occasionally. Most of the time this is straight-forward and painless for both alpacas and humans. If you are lucky enough to have super tame alpacas you can trim their nails by yourself, but normally, you'll need two people; one to hold the animal still and the other to do the trimming

That Illusive garden plant

August 27th 2007 02:21
I often let the alpacas into the garden to mow the lawn for me. It is fabulous, as they munch the grass down like a bowling green, lovely and even. I can just sit and listen to them eat the grass - a much better sound than a conventional lawnmower and especially nice when you don’t have to push the thing around.

There are no grass clippings to collect, just a bit of manure if they decide they need to go. That gets tossed over into the vegie patch. When they’ve eaten the lawn down to the required level, I just herd them out again

Culinary Delights

When you have alpacas for a while you tend to forget how exotic they still are to some people. I heard that a new alpaca owner had asked the seller what to feed her new alpacas “something from a can?”

Alpacas are grazing animals so eat grass, like sheep and cows. They also like to munch on other plants as well such as small shrubs, rushes and trees
