The Mallon halter was developed by a well known trainer of alpacas and llamas, John Mallon. John has made a number of DVD’s on alpaca/llama handling.

There are quite a few different types of alpaca halter out there on the market. Which you buy and use depends largely on your own personal preferences, the local availability and of course, your budget.

We’ve tried a few different types over the years and there are two types which get used around here (while the others lay collecting dust in the back of the tack cupboard

School’s In for Alpaca

January 14th 2008 04:44
I’ve been doing some training with Madeline. I sometimes start halter training a youngster at about 6 months of age, but I thought I’d give Maddy a bit more time to get used to me (and humans in general) before introducing her to formal training.

Little Baby Update

January 7th 2008 03:41
The four new crias are doing well and are happily exploring their world.

The oldest, Donald, is smaller than both Emily and Holly, who are nearly a week younger. The girls' mums are bigger animals, so it makes sense

RIP Jasper

December 6th 2007 21:17
Jasper was a little fancy alpaca born 11 May 2001 from our girl Sabrina. His dad was Jamaica.

We sold Jasper 16 December 2001 with another youngster, ‘Johnny come early’, at an alpaca wether sale. (‘Johnny come early’ was a premmie, born at 305 days gestation, the average is 342 days

De-Nutted

December 4th 2007 22:52
A couple of boys were castrated yesterday. They belong to a lady who bought three youngsters from us early in the year, two boys and a pregnant girl.

I didn’t think to take photos of the “procedure” for you, but it’s probably something you can imagine well enough from a description, without having to see – particularly if you’ve just eaten. Apologies in advance to any squeamish guys out there too

Stupid Human!

December 2nd 2007 22:29
We had a bit of rain overnight and the temperature dropped from the mid 30’s yesterday to a cool 13 overnight. I couldn’t see the alpacas when I looked out this morning, so I figured they were probably in the shed. (They take themselves in there when they feel like it). So I grabbed a jacket and went down to check on them.

I found the alpacas standing in the shed, all sopping wet and shivering. As I went in, they started humming and looked me up and down with those big sad eyes. It wasn’t that cold overnight - quite balmy really (for Tassie, anyway), but the alpacas have only been shorn a week and they were obviously feeling cold. I felt so sorry for them all standing around shivering

A Winner!

One of my babies has won a supreme championship! Our little Penelope (Penny), who we sold with her mum a short while ago, took out the grand prize at a recent alpaca show.

The New Maddy

November 28th 2007 00:10
Maddy’s had her very first yearly haircut.

She had a ton of fleece on her (ok, a slight exaggeration, but it was a lot). So she’s looking quite a bit smaller now

A day at the hairdresser

November 25th 2007 22:03
All the alpacas were shorn on Friday. Even ol’ Bob got a professional job this year (I usually just do him with the hand shears).

They were all pretty calm about it, which was a nice change from some years. We had a lady shearer this year. Not sure if there’s something in that or if the alpacas were just having a good day. In any case, they all got a neat job
