Ah, The Rain!
February 8th 2008 10:43
It’s raining and I’m appreciating that great sound of rain on the tin roof, a little bit more than usual.
We are in an area which is pretty green and normally gets a good amount of rain, so we haven’t had to think much about water issues.
This year’s different though. We haven’t had any decent rain for ages and the paddocks are cracking up. Our creek stopped running a few weeks ago and has started to dry up in places. The creek has only stopped running once before in the eleven years we’ve been here, and that was only very briefly.
We’re in a valley, so when we get a decent rain, our little creek brings water from all the surrounding hills and overflows into the surrounding paddocks.
Sadly, it hasn’t been like that for a long time. I'm not sure when I took this photo, (it was before digital, I had to scan it in).
It has normally been gumboot territory round here, unless you like the feeling of mud squishing between your toes. But when the creek dries up, it hits home what people who are having to buy in every drop, are going through.
It’s hard to describe the feeling, you really have to experience it, but it’s as though you’re watching a life essential disappear and you get a slight feeling of panic.
It’s still green here too, so we're doing better than many places. I’m not sure how I’d feel if the creek turned to dust completely.
So that’s why I’m enjoying the rain. It probably won't be enough to get the creek going again, but every drop is liquid gold from the sky. Never take it for granted.

Our place has traditionally been wet. It's always still been green when most other areas have dried out.
Now seeing our place drying out too, means other places must be totally parched. It's very sad.

I'm hoping those patches will at least be converted to rolling patches by the paccies. Little Chameli discovered a piece of dug-up ground where an electric pole was put in recently and proceeded to roll in it AFTER a night of rain: no more a little golden girl...*sigh*
Katyzzz, I think Tasmania is the best place too

Everyone's been saying it's the driest they've seen down here.
Don't worry, Chammy will clean up again. (Woops! Sorry about the pun!). Just keep that fine suri fleece away from the buzzies!
