24 Hours - Up and At Em
September 18th 2007 22:56
One day old now. He, “Marco Polo” has been cruising about, and he now knows exactly where the milk bar is.
I’m having big trouble getting a decent photo of him. He’s near black, which is always an issue for photos, especially when you’re out in the field and rely on natural lighting. But the photos just don’t seem to be capturing him as he really looks for some reason.
It could be that the fleece on his forehead is flattened in one place, making him look like he’s frowning.
He had his coat on overnight. It got down to about 6°C and there is a strong breeze which is quite cool. The forecast is for 20°C today, so I’ll take his coat off when the sun puts in an appearance.
Apart from when refuelling, Marco hasn't been spending very much time with his mum and she’s looking very confused about that. She expects him to be there by her side and has to go running back to him, humming madly, when she realises he’s gone off somewhere else. He’s looking very much the independent type. That may change once they start to bond. He’s just like his mum in personality though.
Here he is, getting about. This might take a while to load if you're on dial-up. It was a bit noisy with the wind blowing across the mic, so I've left the sound out of this one:
Some alpacas are very nervous and flighty at birth and it takes a lot of patience to gain their trust. Others, like Marco, are more confident and are not startled as easily – I suspect these are the ones who, in a wild situation, would make a nice free lunch for predators because they don’t realise they need to run.

I just love these little anecdotes and he is a cute little fella, isn't he? He's a male, honey, always know where the milk bar is.
He is just so sweet. Love the movies.

I think in the wild they deal with it. If they can't, then they become easy dinner for pumas or wild dogs etc - suppose they need to eat too.
I just sleep better when I know my little dudes are warm enough out there.
He is very cute, they all are.
Cheers.
