A new home for Alana and Anika

March 25th 2008 05:25
We took Alana and her cria Anika (pron. 'ah-nee-ka') to their new home near Huonville on Saturday. They’ll be living with other alpacas, Pema and her cria, Chameli and wethers, Dawa and Mingma.

Preg Test – Negative & Positive

March 20th 2008 00:19
Madeline sat when I put her in with Cappy yesterday, which means she’s probably not pregnant. If she were pregnant, she would have spat at him and run away. I had to get him off her quickly (he’s her dad and we don’t want to go there). He chased a couple of the other girls for a while, then happily, big old Ginger sat, so he still got to have some fun.

POO SUCKER 5000

March 16th 2008 21:08
Is what I call my manure machine. Its correct name is a Greystone Yard Vac and it sucks up the alpaca poo out in the paddocks.

Snakes Alive

March 11th 2008 22:17
It's the time of year for them and I nearly stepped on a slitherer yesterday. I simply wasn’t looking where I was walking.

Luckily the snake knew I was coming (he wasn’t daydreaming about other things as I was) and moved away in the other direction before we made physical contact. I only spotted him because he moved. Needless to say, I was propelled backwards about a metre, but was then pinned to the spot for a short while I watched him slither off into the grass

Daizi’s Baby

March 10th 2008 22:26
My beautiful Daizi had her first cria on Saturday. I thought she’d been behaving a bit imminent for a few days. Her due date was the 13th March so the gestation was 333 days.

Of course, we were out when the cria arrived – we went to test drive a Toyota Prius (would like it, just thinking about the finances). When we got home, I saw a tiny little baby way down the paddock. I thought it could be Alana’s baby who is nearly 4 weeks old, but looked a little small so we went down to have a look

Another Farewell

March 7th 2008 01:01
My herd of agistees left this morning.

I grew quite attached to a couple of them while they were here, so I was a little bit sad to see them go. Those two were the last to go up into the truck as well, so maybe they would have liked to stay behind

Munching small areas

March 2nd 2008 22:20
I’ve never tried tethering an alpaca. Llamas are used for carrying gear on hiking trips and are tethered at campsites to stop them wandering away. They are very closely related to alpacas, so I guess it would be possible to train an alpaca to tether as well. They take to lead training pretty easily.

I occasionally put up temporary fences so the alpacas can munch the grass down in an areas where I don’t have permanent fences. For a large area, I use star pickets and sheep wire. It goes up pretty quickly and the alpacas are generally respectful of fences so it doesn’t need to be a great job to keep them in. I put a strand or two of plain wire along the top as the sheep wire I have is a little low on its own. I think you can buy it in taller rolls though, so that would be the way to go
