Alpaca Notes - Tasmania - February 2008

Boy's Again!

February 28th 2008 05:47
I sometimes go into great detail describing the various goings on at my place ...

... but on this occasion I'll just post the video instead

Cold Snap

February 25th 2008 02:37
I had a worrying night Saturday. It rained heavily throughout the day (no complaints about that!). But the temperature dropped and then the wind came up and it kept blowing and raining into the night.

Our alpacas were shorn back in November, so they have enough fleece now for them to cope, but I was concerned about our agistees, who were shorn just over a month ago. Our crias too, especially the two youngest ones, would be feeling pretty cold out in that

Putting Girls with Boys

February 22nd 2008 04:35
We’ve been doing some alpaca mating again.

The gestation for an alpaca is 11 and a half months, and female alpacas can re-breed again pretty well straight away. So, in a wild herd they would be pregnant most of their lives

Work From Home

February 20th 2008 21:11
Another orble site, www.parentingissues.net , recently published a post, ‘I am a parent therefore I don't work!’

I’m not a parent (except to my alpacas and dogs of course!), but I know perfectly well where she’s coming from because I ‘work from home

Snip Snip

February 18th 2008 02:23
We did toenails on Saturday. Here’s a tip: When cutting alpaca toenails, plan to do it after it has been raining.

After rain, it’s a bit like how your nails are softer after a bath or shower. Same with alpacas when they’ve been walking about on wet ground

Will they eat the fruit trees?

February 11th 2008 03:57
Yes, they will, absolutely. Well, not totally absolutely, but certainly as high as those long, slinky necks will reach. And not just the fruit trees either.

I’ve seen the occasional alpaca up on their hind legs munching leaves higher up in the tree, but most alpacas will take only what they can reach while keeping four legs on the ground

Ah, The Rain!

February 8th 2008 10:43
It’s raining and I’m appreciating that great sound of rain on the tin roof, a little bit more than usual.

We are in an area which is pretty green and normally gets a good amount of rain, so we haven’t had to think much about water issues

White Boy

February 3rd 2008 22:57
Maralyn’s cria arrived on Saturday. Now we have two birthdays on the 2nd Feb, dachshund Lucy, and alpaca (yet to be named), though we don’t generally celebrate the alpacas’ birthdays. Just the first one. Even after 11 years it’s still exciting when a new baby arrives.

Lucy’s Birthday

February 3rd 2008 21:43
Our little black and tan Lucy turned 9 years old on Saturday. Time goes so fast.

We always have a special day for the dogs on their birthdays with presents and lots of games and a roast chicken dinner. Lucy’s a big fan of squeaky toys, so it’s never hard knowing what to get her as a present

Alpaca Training – Why bother?

February 1st 2008 01:13
It is not absolutely essential for an alpaca to be halter trained and many people have alpacas who are never halter trained. I have several alpacas here who I purchased as adults and haven’t got round to doing any training with.

They’re still personable, easy to handle and happy alpacas, they’re just not used to walking around on the end of a lead
