Alpaca Notes - Tasmania - December 2007

Here comes another one

December 30th 2007 22:21
Lovely Sheba has had a little girl cria, born 12.05pm on Saturday. She’s snow white and gorgeous. She was too bright for the eyes for the first day before she discovered the joys of the rolling patch. Now, with a liberal coating of dirt, she’s more a dull grey colour and doesn’t look so pristine. Never mind, they’ll all be clean again once it rains.

Another Alpaca Unpacks

December 28th 2007 04:49
My lovely Alice had a little girl this morning at 10.15. Actually, she had a BIG girl, which explains Alice’s massive belly over the past few weeks.

Christmas - Gone to the Dogs

December 26th 2007 22:37
The 'kids' in our family get Christmas pressies. The dachies enjoy ripping into parcels and it’s watching them that makes Christmas for me.

336 days pregnant

December 20th 2007 22:18
Well, most of the girls are sitting around looking like whales today. We’ve had fantastic weather, warm, sunny days, 30 yesterday and 15 overnight.

A perfect 24 expected today and I think we’ve hit that already

334 days pregnant

Fiona and Pema are starting to sit around like beached whales now. Alice, due on 3rd January, is also looking like a barrel with legs. As they have little fleece at the moment, if you look very closely at the girls’ bellies you can sometimes see the cria (baby) moving about in there.

Dachshund Notes

December 14th 2007 05:18
Introducing Lucy Lou, otherwise known as Lucy Pup (or Lucy Paaaaaaarp). She’s 8 years old now, so we should probably stop calling her that, though she’s very little and people think she’s a puppy.

Lucy is a black and tan miniature long haired dachshund. A bit short in the legs (and neck) to be confused with an alpaca

Some alpacas are posers and will parade in front of the camera for as long as you point it at them. (Just like some people hey!) I've got a couple of alpacas like that. They're the ones who you end up with a zillion photos of, simply because they're always there when you turn up with a camera.

However, there are definitely some alpacas who consciously prevent you from getting a decent photo of them. I guess, as most of them are naturally wary of humans (very wise animals!) they get nervous when you're following them around with a camera

Waiting Again

December 9th 2007 21:58
We have a couple of girls due to unpack in the next few weeks.

Princess Fiona is coming up to 4 years of age, but this will be her first baby (cria). She was mated to Cappy who is producing stunning progeny. Fiona also has a wonderful, soft fleece and a teddy bear face, so hoping for a lovely cria from her

RIP Jasper

December 6th 2007 21:17
Jasper was a little fancy alpaca born 11 May 2001 from our girl Sabrina. His dad was Jamaica.

We sold Jasper 16 December 2001 with another youngster, ‘Johnny come early’, at an alpaca wether sale. (‘Johnny come early’ was a premmie, born at 305 days gestation, the average is 342 days

De-Nutted

December 4th 2007 22:52
A couple of boys were castrated yesterday. They belong to a lady who bought three youngsters from us early in the year, two boys and a pregnant girl.

I didn’t think to take photos of the “procedure” for you, but it’s probably something you can imagine well enough from a description, without having to see – particularly if you’ve just eaten. Apologies in advance to any squeamish guys out there too

Stupid Human!

December 2nd 2007 22:29
We had a bit of rain overnight and the temperature dropped from the mid 30’s yesterday to a cool 13 overnight. I couldn’t see the alpacas when I looked out this morning, so I figured they were probably in the shed. (They take themselves in there when they feel like it). So I grabbed a jacket and went down to check on them.

I found the alpacas standing in the shed, all sopping wet and shivering. As I went in, they started humming and looked me up and down with those big sad eyes. It wasn’t that cold overnight - quite balmy really (for Tassie, anyway), but the alpacas have only been shorn a week and they were obviously feeling cold. I felt so sorry for them all standing around shivering
