Paddock Hair Styles 4-8September 25th 2007 22:08
Marti is a laid back, wash and wear sort of guy. He strikes me as the type who doesn't bother to shave on the weekends and goes out to dinner in whatever he happened to throw on this morning.

All my alpacas are individuals. They each have their own personality likes, dislikes and hair style.
Sounds like…September 20th 2007 22:56
Just like every animal, alpacas have their own sounds. The main noise they make is a Hum, which you’ll hear when they’re concerned about something. This is a very common sound to hear alpacas making at shows when they’re generally stressed out to the max. Mums and babies also hum to each other.
24 Hours - Up and At EmSeptember 18th 2007 22:56
One day old now. He, “Marco Polo” has been cruising about, and he now knows exactly where the milk bar is.
I’m having big trouble getting a decent photo of him. He’s near black, which is always an issue for photos, especially when you’re out in the field and rely on natural lighting. But the photos just don’t seem to be capturing him as he really looks for some reason
It’s a boy!September 18th 2007 04:24
334 days and it’s a boy! This little guy arrived approximately 6am this morning. I missed it, of course. Here he is at 6.15am, still in his cling wrap.
Things To Do - While You're Waiting... Check my NostrilSeptember 16th 2007 22:10
333 days pregnant today. Waiting, and watching. Here’s our expectant mum. This was filmed a while back, she has a lot more fleece on her now. Have to think about shearing soon, now spring has arrived.
I've tried to compress it so it doesn't take half the day to download, but its still about 2MB so might take a while. If you're on dial-up, go and make a nice cuppa while you're waiting
Things To Do - While You're Waiting... FLASH!September 14th 2007 04:33
Waiting for alpacas to unpack is like watching paint dry, or the old proverbial kettle. You can't do anything to hurry things up, so you just gotta be patient.
I've been doing a multimedia course which requires learning Flash, something super fun to do while I wait for my girls to produce their beautiful babies for me
330 DaysSeptember 13th 2007 07:33
Well, our “maybe” pregnant girl is 330 days tomorrow. This is the number of days into the gestation that all the books say that you should start watching closely for impending delivery.
She’s lying about like a beached whale and when she walks it’s heavily and very, very slowly, like an alpaca sumo wrestler. The others will wander off to another part of the paddock to graze. You can see the “do we have to?” look appear on her face as she heaves herself onto her feet and rumbles off across the paddock after them. Sometimes she doesn’t bother, she just sits there by herself and watches after them. They come back eventually
Just a Happy SnapSeptember 11th 2007 02:19
I took this photo while I was down the paddock checking on the girls the other day. The two little girls were just sitting there in the sun together looking very cute.
The fawn girl on the left is Madeline (Maddy), born on 11 January 07 and the white girl is Penelope (Penny), born 28 December 06
ToenailsSeptember 9th 2007 22:29
We did the alpacas’ toenails yesterday. Alpacas don’t have hooves but a padded foot, just like a camel and similar to a dog, but with just two toenails on each foot.
Their toenails grow just like ours and need to be trimmed occasionally. Most of the time this is straight-forward and painless for both alpacas and humans. If you are lucky enough to have super tame alpacas you can trim their nails by yourself, but normally, you'll need two people; one to hold the animal still and the other to do the trimming
Due to Unpack?September 7th 2007 01:16
I have an alpaca due to unpack in a few weeks. At least I think she is, it’s a little bit hard to tell with these guys. Apart from the fact that she has a ton of fleece on her, so can’t tell what could be under there, they hide their babies really well and don’t give too much away. Survival instinct, I suppose.
She was mated on 20 October last year, so that makes her due around 26th September. The average gestation for alpacas is around 342 days, but they can go several weeks either side, so I’m keeping an eye on her
Huacaya or Suri?September 4th 2007 22:15
Which alpaca do you like best?
There are two types of alpaca, Huacaya and Suri. They’re essentially the same, but the huacaya has a fleece similar to a sheep, while the suri’s fleece hangs in ringlets
Gumboot CuriositySeptember 3rd 2007 22:40
My alpacas seem to have a fascination with gumboots, at least the crias (babies) do anyway. They’re not so interested while I’m walking about, but if I sit down on the ground with my legs out in front, my gumboots appear to take on a life of their own.
Perhaps it’s because the boots stick up and as they are a small distance away from me (albeit attached by legs), the crias behave as though my boots are some other animal which needs to be checked out
